Coating system calculator: paint consumption
Work out how much coating an area needs: pick a typical system or define your own layers. Consumption is derived from dry film thickness and volume solids with losses, and the volume is split into base, hardener and thinner. Surface area for steel profiles is calculated in the painting area tool.
| Layer | DFT, µm | Consumption, l/m² | Volume, l |
|---|---|---|---|
| Грунт эпоксидный | 80 | 0,222 | 22,22 |
| Эмаль полиуретановая | 60 | 0,182 | 18,18 |
System parameters are typical reference values for estimation. For as-built documentation take thickness, volume solids and mixing ratios from the material datasheet and the coating design.
Frequently asked questions
How is paint consumption per square metre calculated?
Theoretical consumption in litres per m² equals dry film thickness in µm divided by volume solids in percent times 10. For example 80 µm at 60% solids gives 80 / (60 × 10) = 0.133 l/m². Practical consumption is higher by the loss factor.
What loss factor should be used?
Losses depend on application method and geometry: airless spraying of large flat areas loses less, brushes, lattice structures and small bore pipe lose more. Losses are an input field with a moderate default; refine them from the work execution plan.
What are volume solids and where do I find them?
Volume solids show the share of the material that stays on the surface after the solvent evaporates. The figure is given in the material datasheet.
Why split into base, hardener and thinner?
Two-component materials are supplied separately and orders are placed per component. The calculator splits the volume by the mixing ratio and adds thinner as a percentage of the paint volume.
How this relates to painting area
Material consumption is derived from the area to be coated. The area for steel profiles and for a list of positions is calculated by the painting area calculator: it returns m² by length or by mass, and this calculator converts them into litres per layer. More on rates and losses in the article paint consumption for steel structures.
